Entertaining Marketing – I’m just a bill

“I’m just a bill, yes I’m only a bill and I’m sitting here on capitol hill”. Feel free to sing along

When I was a kid, Saturday morning cartoons were a kid’s weekend stress reliever . My brother and I would grab big bowls of cereal and sit in front of the TV and enjoy our morning off from school watching cartoons. My mom would then force us to get ready and go outside and play.

Schoolhouse Rock was a Saturday morning series of educational cartoons that ran between the cartoons themselves. These were a big part of the Saturday morning experience but had we known we were actually learning something we probably would have questioned watching it. Little did I know that I was being presented with Entertaining Marketing and that 30 years later I would be writing about it.

The other night I was helping my son with his homework and we were talking about how a bill becomes a law. I tried to explain the video to him and I am shocked that I didn’t pop up YouTube and show it to him. This morning I decided to take a look at the video to see how close I was to being correct or maybe I am just looking to be entertained.

What does this have to do with marketing? EVERYTHING.

I have not watched that video in decades and it stayed in my mind. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could do the same with our companies? We can!

Educate

This video teaches us the process of how a bill becomes a law. It does so very clearly and it shows the steps from the beginning all the way to the end. Along the way it explains the veto process and how congress argues back and forth until they agree or kill the bill. It’s amazing but I didn’t learn this much in my high school history class. Sorry Mr. Wilson.

Entertain

Schoolhouse Rock was ahead of its time in so many ways. They went viral by word of mouth before the internet was a thought in Al Gore’s mind (hmmm).

They were teaching us through entertainment and song. Using creativity and catchy tunes they hooked us and kept us. 30 years later, here I am writing about it and singing the tune.

Fix a problem

The video fixes a problem. It helps educators and parents explain to their kids how a bill become a law. Do you try and solve a problem through your marketing or are you just pushing prices? I’m not knocking your approach but we can all better utilize our resources when trying to reach potential customers.

Talk to your audience from their perspective and offer a solution. That sticks a lot longer than a 50% coupon with a 30 day expiration date ever will.

This series is one for the ages and to this day it continues to teach and reach audiences. Here is what I am taking from this:

  1. I was reminded how a bill becomes a law
  2. I also know that by adding an entertainment value to my marketing and sales I will become memorable and hopefully a resource to my potential clients
  3. Entertaining Marketing actually works. Try it.

Good selling!

Byron
